This is a picture of a door that was sent to me. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the source, but this door could work for either Teacher Appreciation Week or for Dr. Seuss Week. In large print it says "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" On the pictures of the cars, the students wrote or drew places they would like to visit. In the upper left corner of the door, the sign says: "Congratulations!! Today is your day. You're off to great places. You're off and away!"</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As soon as I saw it, I knew what I could use it for. With Teacher Appreciation Week approaching, I am always on the look out for ideas. This year I have had the opportunity to be my son's first grade teacher. It has been so fun to have this experience! My older 2 children are at the middle school, where they have more than 10 teachers between them, so really I feel as though I have only one bigger teacher gift to buy this year. Unless of course I want to buy myself something big! Hmmm...not a bad idea! :) <br />
Anyway, my daughter's kindergarten teacher always has a water bottle with her so when I saw this water bottle with a Superman symbol I knew I had to grab it! <br />

Yup that's right...ONE MONTH from now! It scares me to think of the school year ending that soon! There's still so much to do, so much to fit in, and nobody who wants to listen to me. Ok so maybe that's how my day went today, but I do know that it gets that way as the weather gets warmer. <br />
So for the next month I am going to focus on sharing some door decorating ideas or possible gift ideas. If you have something you would like to share that relates to this topic; pictures of doors, appreciation/gift ideas, or a link to your site, please feel free to leave a comment.<br />
Check out this awesome 3-D door from my school last year. (Thanks for all you DEW!) From what I could tell, the Mountain Dew can was created using a poster board, bent to form an arch. The arch was then taped onto another poster board to hold its' form and then painted. The yellow "Mountain Dew" coming out of the top of the can was crinkled (yellow) tissue paper. I can't remember how the straw was created. Any guesses? I'm sure you could roll up red poster board or some kind of plastic to form one though?? What do you think?<br />

Odd NumbersLearning even and odd numbers, especially when the the number is larger than a single digit can be tricky for students to master. First of all, if you don't have this book:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhepXjG4pvVLahZlecKIQb5EH1ztBMcGrgippnAcZF9dv1OUG3CoAR-Eqa3wN0yjBXkBDQd_FKwvMag8vzCqbTuGI9fT-wD95X-8995dNP_9j-HBz3bQUNg0HNqLnIBilRnpt5yaLlENRM/s1600/imagesCA69CUAR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhepXjG4pvVLahZlecKIQb5EH1ztBMcGrgippnAcZF9dv1OUG3CoAR-Eqa3wN0yjBXkBDQd_FKwvMag8vzCqbTuGI9fT-wD95X-8995dNP_9j-HBz3bQUNg0HNqLnIBilRnpt5yaLlENRM/s320/imagesCA69CUAR.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would suggest getting it to add to your math reads.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Following your reading, have the class play this Even Steven and Odd Todd game as created by <a href="http://firstgradealacarte.blogspot.com/2011/03/even-steven-odd-todd.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">First Grade A La Carte</span></a>. The students pair up and decide who will be Steven and who will be Todd. They then take turns rolling a dice. If the number rolled is even, "Steven" moves their game piece towards the winner circle. If the number rolled is odd, then "Todd" moves their game piece towards the winner's circle. The first person to reach the winner spot...wins!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's an Odd Todd and Even Steven video from You Tube that I am sure kids would enjoy singing along to!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Speaking of Odd Todd and Even Steven, check out these *adorable* little guys from </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The activity that went along with these little guys was just as fun and cute as they look. For the example, Mrs. Carroll used candy corn, but any treat would be fine and hold the kids' attention I'm sure! ;) First, you will need to explain to the students the difference between Todd and Steven. Odd Todd doesn't like to share and always has a different number of items in each hand (ie: 8 + 7 = 15), but Even Steven is super nice and always want things equal and fair with his friends. After going through this, she gave each student a pile of (uncounted) candy corn. With a partner, teams had to come up with whether the number of candy corn they had been given was an odd or even number. Please refer to the link above for a further explanation of the activity. Definitely something I will be using next year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is another FREE download so it would be super easy to print these pages out and store them away to use for a math station/center. The only thing I think I would add to this would be a recording sheet so the kids know they have some accountability. Other than that, I love the simplicity of this idea. The kids take dominoes and place them on the correct mat, depending on what they had. The mats read: EVEN & ODD (numbers on both sides), EVEN (numbers on both sides), or ODD (numbers on both sides).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a twist in the game Rock, Paper, Scissors to incorporate even and odd numbers. <span>This is a two player
game, one person is “odds” and the other is “evens.” Kids shake their
fist, chant “1,2,3, shoot!” Then, they stick out zero, one, two, three,
four, or five fingers. Kids find the sum of their fingers. If the answer
is even, then evens gets a point. If it’s odd, odds gets a point. </span></div>

Remember me? I have had this blog on my mind for a while now, but man oh man, I swear life gets busier by the day! I'm not sure if it's the age of my children and all that they're involved in, working full time and being a mom to 4, the stress of keeping up on everything at school, including RTI, or what, but yeah, you could say I've been busy!<br />
First of all, I just have to say how proud I am of all my cute little firsties. They are doing so great with reading this year and the majority of my class is on grade level. Thank you parents, volunteers and everyone else!! I think for this reason, my focus lately has been geared more towards math and what I can help them with there. We have done math centers every day this week and most of last week. Yes, that can be a little bit more work, but I think the small group instruction is so much more valuable. <br />
My first grade team sat down at the beginning of the year and mapped out what math essential goals we wanted our students to be able to achieve by the end of the school year. We then broke down our goals by trimesters so the end goal would seem achievable. Here's what we came up with.<br />
<br />
Trimester 1<br />
Students will be able to verbally count to 30, write to 30 (without any reversal and with neat handwriting), recognize the symbols +, -, and =, and be able to correctly use those symbols in a problem.<br />
<br />
Trimester 2<br />
Students will be able to verbally count to 70, write to 70 (without any reversal and with neat handwriting), add and subtract within 10.<br />
<br />
Trimester 3 -<br />
Students will be able to verbally count to 120, write to 120 (without any reversal and with neat handwriting), add and subtract within 20.<br />
<br />
If you are a first grade teacher, you may be aware that the new goal for first graders is to be able to reach 120 by the end of the year, where it used to be 100. We view our goals as "baby steps" towards reaching that goal. It has been such a thorough thing to do and by doing this process has opened our eyes to a lot of things we assumed the students already knew, but didn't. I am linking up to some activities I have come across that have been helpful in reaching our goals. If there is something you feel could be useful also, please leave a comment below. <br />

So what about you? Does your grade also set math standards? What are the ones your grade is working on? I'd love to know what's important to each of you!<br />
<br />
In the next few posts I am going to be writing about various math ideas (centers, games, activities, etc.) and then I will be moving on to teacher appreciation. I have lots of door decoration ideas and gift giving ideas I am eager to share, so stick around...Allison @ Room Mom 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/07444319140373672896noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2305320463778584314.post-8462987474087286142012-10-28T20:01:00.000-07:002012-10-28T20:01:18.484-07:00Halloween Party IdeasWOW! How do I ever begin to explain all that has been going on in my life for the past 3 months?!? I was hoping to return to my blog much sooner than now, with ideas for back-to-school, fall, math and also get a jump on Halloween ideas. Unfortunately, none of that happened before now. Hopefully by now, if you are a room parent, you have already begun thinking of what games, crafts, snacks, activities or ideas you have in mind for your 1st classroom party of the school year...HALLOWEEN! If you haven't yet thought of it, and you find yourself waking up in a cold sweat at night, here are a few tips and tricks to get you started.<br />
<br />
1. PLAN IT <br />
Over the years, I have found the best system for younger aged kids to plan to run the party as centers or stations. Break the students into small groups and have them rotate from one center to the next. The smaller sized groups makes it easier for parent volunteers to manage and it helps the students by changing up the activities. The best ideas for centers include age appropriate games, snacks, or crafts. After rotating through the centers, it's best to end the party with a whole group game or activity or a fun book relating to the holiday.<br />
<br />
2. GET HELP!<br />
Don't try to do everything yourself! You will end up either stressed, broke, or at home at the end of the party crying into your diet Coke. Ask for help!!! Parents, grandparents, or close friends are all great resources. Ask for help in a variety of ways...either by attending the party to assist or by donating goods to the party, especially for any working parents who can't attend. Check with the teacher ahead of time to see if the school/classroom has any supplies you might need for the party. Most likely, the teacher may be willing to donate glue, construction paper or other craft items. Keep in mind, that you not only need to plan for craft and game supplies and snacks, but also for paper ware or any simple decorations.<br />
<br />
3. HAVE FUN!<br />
<span lang="EN">Even though you can guarantee things WILL get chaotic and loud during the party, enjoy it! The kids should have a fun time no matter what they are doing...even if things don't go according to plan, which sometimes happens! One thing to think of is taking pictures. I know that I take pictures of my class during the holiday parties so that I can add them to my end of the year DVD. If that's something a teacher doesn't do, you may want to assign a parent to be in charge of this assignment.</span><br />

Not only that, but I think it also gives students a place to refer to if there is a question and they are too afraid to ask. Here are some ideas, pictures and examples of how teachers are incorporating math into their classrooms.<br />

Deal Out A 10 is a game that could be used as a math center. The student draws a card, writes their number on the form provided and then draws the remaining numbers needed on the 10 frame. The child then has to come up with the correct number sentence. Here's a FREE place value story recommended for 1st and 2nd graders from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-Place-Value-Story"><span style="color: #cc0000;">TpT (Sarah Sebesta)</span></a> . I read through this 5 page story and really like the simplicity of it, along with the pictures. It seems like a great addition to my file!</div>

I am going to create the black line for this paper first (easy enough) and then use this idea at a math center/station to review place value. Each student will need a paper, 2 dice and crayons or a pencil. The directions from Pinterest were these: Math center idea for tens and ones. use foam dice so they don't make any noise. Student rolls 2 dice. The 1st number is for the tens place and the 2nd one is for the ones place. If they roll a 6 and 4 they write down 64 and then they draw the picture. You can add more dice for larger numbers. I love that students are able to write and draw the number for extra practice!!<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;">**UPDATE</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">: I created a blackline for this place value game and here goes my 1st attempt to upload it to google docs. I'm crossing my fingers it works! Click on the picture to get your FREEBIE... (hopefully!) :)</span><br />

This first idea is to be used as a math center/station. The directions can be printed along with the game board if you follow my link. Basically, the students are to roll 2 or 3 dice (1 at a time) depending on their skill level. The students place their dice in the column they want, trying to ultimately end up with a smaller number than their opponent. Your students could also practice write their numbers in standard, expanded and written forms for some extra practice and review. This is a game of strategy and fun. I know my firsties would have a lot of fun with this activity!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, I would make a recording sheet like the one shown above. Next I would give each child 2-3 dice to roll to make a number. In the column that says "number" have the child record the number they rolled. For example, if your student rolled a 3, 6, and 2, they would write down 362. The last step would be to have the student glue down the correct place value. Cheerios for the 1's, pretzel rods <span style="color: black;">for the 10's and Chex cereal for the 100's.</span></div>

Instead of scrapping the idea I'm thinking about gathering more ideas and giving it another shot. Here are a few ideas I have come across that might help me (and maybe you) with math journals in the future.<br />
First of all, can I just say how inspired I am by <a href="http://www.kindergartenkindergarten.com/math-problem-solving/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Kathyrn at Kindergarten Kindergarten</span></a>! I LOVE her math journals! Take a look at some of the examples from them.<br />

Oh. My. Goodness! Just looking at her students' work gives me hope for next year. I can't even begin to tell you how excited this makes me. My inner teacher nerd self is thrilled to have found this! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think there are many components to making a child's learning successful. Hands-on learning, like the math journals above, but also learning terms and meanings for math can be overwhelming for kids. These <a href="http://loryevanspage.blogspot.com/2011/06/math-songs.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">math songs from Lory's Page</span></a> are super cute, catchy and great for teaching younger students. There are 12 songs ready to download and print out. Wouldn't they make a nice addition to a math journal too!?! Maybe glue each song at the front of each new topic taught. Love it!</div>

These kindergartners put paint on half of a sheet of paper, folded it in half and created a symmetrical monster. To take it a step further and incorporate another subject area, I think for 1st graders or older, you could have the students write a story to go along with their monster.<br />
<br />
This was a <a href="http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/bkramer/NameSymmetry%20Folder/NameSymmetry.htm"><span style="color: #cc0000;">6th grade math/art lesson</span></a> involving the students' names. Definitely too hard for my 1st graders, but such a cool idea!<br />

An easier name project might be this one that comes from <a href="http://www.gettingmessywithmsjessi.com/2011/08/schools-back-in-session.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Getting Messy With Ms. Jessi</span></a>.</div>

Using Bendaroos and letter blocks, kids can discuss which letters of the alphabet are symmetrical and which ones are not. </div>

This idea is from <a href="http://homeschoolorbust.blogspot.com/2011/05/symmetry-fun-way.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Homeschool or Bust</span></a>. For her older children, she took the idea a step further and had them make fractions. Letters that are symmetrical: 14/26, which can reduce to 7/13. Continue thinking of fractions that could challenge an older group of kids.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got a kick out of this possible art/math idea of creating symmeTREE from <a href="http://stepintosecondgrade.blogspot.com/2012/03/more-verbs-symmetry-and-some-turtle.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Step Into 2nd Grade with Mrs. Lemons</span></a>. I love the play on words. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She also did a bulletin board similar to the first picture on this post, only the students had to draw the other half to a school staff member. Too funny!</div>

If you are wondering where to get started, how math centers might look, or where to find FREE materials to get you started...look no further. I have linked too all her FREE math ideas. Of course she has more than just addition activities, unlike the title of this post, but I thought I would feature one of her many roll and color activities. Most kids know about Angry Birds. In fact these birds seem to be everywhere now-a-days...hats, shirts, pillows, toys, etc. With them being so popular, I think my students would be super excited to know we were using them for math too. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you're looking for another theme, don't worry Sara has you covered there too! There are games using dinosaurs, Flat Stanley (love that book series!), Legos, and many, many more fun ideas. Oh and while I'm singing out my praises for her blog, can I mention that I also love her </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am strongly thinking of using the same concept with my students next year, but making a few changes. I am still figuring out how I want to work my math program next year. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ok so on to some more addition games/ideas since that is the title of this post!</div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.greatschools.org/worksheets-activities/5338-adding-dice.gs"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Great Schools</span></a> has this free dice adding worksheet that could easily be added to a center for extra (unguided) practice.<br />

Ok so you might have to use this addition game (<a href="http://heathersfirstgradeheart.blogspot.com/2011/11/turkey-scratchnumber-help.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Roll, Add and Write</span></a>) around Thanksgiving because of the turkey in the corner, but what a great practice for younger kids with adding, number recognition and correct number formation!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This activity came from <a href="http://heathersfirstgradeheart.blogspot.com/search/label/math%20games"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Heather's Heart</span></a> and I am including a link to her math games because she also has a lot of neat ideas to choose from!</div>

Ok so here are a few money ideas, games and activities to incorporate into your math stations. I have lots, so this may be broken into a few different segments.<br />
<br />
Magic Money looks like a great resource for both home and school use. It is a <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Counting-Coins-Made-Easy"><span style="color: #cc0000;">free download</span></a> from TpT, thanks to Nicole. I love that there is also a letter already typed up to send home explaining how to use this system. Trust me, money is a hard thing for little learners to grasp, so any help tool is greatly appreciated!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="http://talesfromak-1classroom.blogspot.com/2011/11/more-math-freebies.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Tales From A K-1 Classroom</span></a> has more than just FREE money printables so make sure you check out the link so you don't miss out. Trading Up looks like a fun one to use though!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi19ZEXa6jOXqHx6HYi6ZvEDTqd6YCsUXI4FsQXEmmAM-xIs2twn5oCXocxEpVDdJPQM_rOCRgyXDTnJFIvfsDytKzE3tMGTr5KdyL40pbG_-jLWjWKn67RKYPp59kTB5_jmE9zAO0H9DY/s1600/trading+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi19ZEXa6jOXqHx6HYi6ZvEDTqd6YCsUXI4FsQXEmmAM-xIs2twn5oCXocxEpVDdJPQM_rOCRgyXDTnJFIvfsDytKzE3tMGTr5KdyL40pbG_-jLWjWKn67RKYPp59kTB5_jmE9zAO0H9DY/s1600/trading+up.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Another money game, similar to the one above, is called Money Trade. The freebie is from <a href="http://www.classroomfreebiestoo.com/2012/02/money-trade-game-for-k-2.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Classroom Freebies Too</span></a>. The game was played with kindergartners and went up to $0.25 so it seems like a more basic/simpler game than the one above. I'm thinking I would start with this one first and then move to the one above next. You could also use this idea for your struggling or lower students and use the one above for the more advanced students. And finally, my last measurement idea (for now) comes from <a href="http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/marshmallow-catapult-874571/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Family Fun</span></a>. Make a marshmallow catapult. This could be an in class (group) project or a homework assignment, depending on how you wanted to do it. Either way, launch a few marshmallows, measure their distance and record your answers.</div>

You're welcome :). <a href="http://clutterfreeclassroom.blogspot.com/2012/03/get-inspired-math-centers.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">The Clutter-Free Classroom</span></a> (amazing blog...just in case you haven't visited) featured lots of great ideas. You'll have to visit her site to see for yourself though!<br />
One of the ideas that was featured was this from <a href="http://www.mrsgrayspond.com/2011/07/more-frog-theme-downloads-coming-your.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Here We Go Loopty Loo</span></a>. I thought I would bring it up so I could explain why you might see the word "BUILD" around some teachers' math area. It is an acronym for:<br />
B - Buddy Games<br />
U - Using Manipulatives<br />
I - Independent Working/Reading<br />
L - Learning About Numbers<br />
D - Doing Math<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhip3TJkX6Q-8x724QaJ_VMJofdYmNyOcwSMGylV1dSCxznvvNYCBMEWIwey9m56X0AbOc_97TyXWIKvxONR1pqqBEbzDGtVAhH6F8DKypaentmDGRNQUhvA89RW6PJgwKfrz7n9rPkIWE/s1600/101_4118_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhip3TJkX6Q-8x724QaJ_VMJofdYmNyOcwSMGylV1dSCxznvvNYCBMEWIwey9m56X0AbOc_97TyXWIKvxONR1pqqBEbzDGtVAhH6F8DKypaentmDGRNQUhvA89RW6PJgwKfrz7n9rPkIWE/s320/101_4118_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you would like to download some BUILD cards, check out <a href="http://adventures-inteaching.blogspot.com/2012/02/build-buckets.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Adventures In Teaching</span></a>. I love the BUILD check in sheet offered at the bottom of the post. It looks like the perfect way to keep track of students during this time!! I even love this <a href="http://adventures-inteaching.blogspot.com/2012/05/youve-been-waiting-now-here-it-is-more.html?showComment=1339128869526#c312884815815618916"><span style="color: #cc0000;">second post</span></a> she offered with more tips on how she runs her math. Very helpful tips!<br />
Here's a look into yet another classroom and another set up for math stations. This one comes from <a href="http://www.differentiatedkindergarten.com/2012/05/differentiated-math-stations-and.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">A Differentiated Kindergarten</span></a>. Within this post, I love how she broke down how to set things up and how she made math stations work for her. Also I love her color coded system of breaking kids into groups based on their skill levels/readiness. Check it out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZXGOVhPQVsf-AoBWMDrJerJSAtLtjmyZt5QzCj8R7PpZJICToY2Evrdm2Jx4kGdG4w9EECtQFKbxJansM_Sp7Ruo6vILfb_w2YvJKXwfM1f2ibjLvPOEjjI7rn3s8qhiZ9vZ-9xUGxk/s1600/math+stations+stuff+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZXGOVhPQVsf-AoBWMDrJerJSAtLtjmyZt5QzCj8R7PpZJICToY2Evrdm2Jx4kGdG4w9EECtQFKbxJansM_Sp7Ruo6vILfb_w2YvJKXwfM1f2ibjLvPOEjjI7rn3s8qhiZ9vZ-9xUGxk/s1600/math+stations+stuff+1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And in case you're wondering how you're going to tackle Math Stations in your classroom, take a look at <a href="http://mrsriccaskindergarten.blogspot.com/2012/01/math-stations-poster-freebie.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Mrs. Ricca's Kindergarten</span></a> for this FREE printable of expectations.<br />

<a href="http://petersons-pad.blogspot.com/2011/10/math-stations.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Peterson's Pad</span></a> also had a chart like the one above. It isn't one you can download, but at least it shows you another version of the chart so you can create your own set of expectations. She also has lots of great tips and suggestions! Here's a link to some of the <a href="http://petersons-pad.blogspot.com/search/label/Math%20Work%20Stations"><span style="color: #cc0000;">games</span></a> she uses. They look like tons of fun!!</div>

My best friend from high school passed away suddenly the weekend before school let out, so I had to call in a substitute for the last day of school. Who does that? I then had to hurry off to her funeral and return home before our family vacation started. I spent a full week with my husband's entire family on a vacation to California. We went to Disneyland, Universal Studios, the beach and even had to time to attend a baseball game (Angels vs. Yankees). {GoYankees!} It's been fun, wild and crazy, to say the least! So now it's summer, and even though teachers do get time off from work, my brain doesn't quite go all the way into sleep mode. All summer I think of ways I can improve my teaching, look for new ideas to incorporate into the following school year, and work on projects! <br />
This summer, my goal is to beef up my math. I love math and I want my students to gain a love for it too! I have heard many teachers talk about Debbie Diller Math Work Stations,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
but I haven't read this book yet. It sounds like maybe I should! If any of you use math stations or have wonderful math ideas, please let me know. As I come across ideas this summer, I will post them here so hopefully others can benefit too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are a few places I have spotted math stations being used. At least it's somewhere to help me get started!</div>
<a href="http://firstgraderatlast.blogspot.com/search/label/math%20work%20stations"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Sarah from First Grader at Last</span></a> shows off this cute and organized system she uses to store her math stations in. (I use these for drawers for other things in my classroom so I know you can find them at Walmart.) She also shows you how she stores her math items...in ziplock bags and of course laminated!! <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/3rd-Grade-Gridiron/?&category=2614&breadcrumb=5&range=1"><span style="color: #cc0000;">HERE</span> </a>is a link to Dana's TpT store, where she has offered 17 FREE math games/activities to get you started.</div>

<a href="http://secondgradestyle.blogspot.com/2011/10/math-games.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Julie from Second Grade Style</span></a> went with the idea of using plastic tote baskets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFd_Z0Ra_gw8oah-FhPIJq7mmOjAd6xf-jy4K5miCxOILrqQjzj9zVLWMTpLDgH-URgAC1QHSWgW63E1oJgL1QeSQa4qyrX6JXsIYHRKGV3n-B0giWiX1yxQvquJG6JBKHMw7RRKlej4w/s1600/math+totes" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFd_Z0Ra_gw8oah-FhPIJq7mmOjAd6xf-jy4K5miCxOILrqQjzj9zVLWMTpLDgH-URgAC1QHSWgW63E1oJgL1QeSQa4qyrX6JXsIYHRKGV3n-B0giWiX1yxQvquJG6JBKHMw7RRKlej4w/s320/math+totes" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She mentioned that she stores the totes on a rolling cart and then when it's time for math stations, she simply rolls the cart to the middle of the room where the kids can then access all the materials easily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just as I was about to post this, I came across someone thinking the same as me. (Scary!) <a href="http://time4kindergarten.blogspot.com/2012/06/math-work-stations-again.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Tiffani from Time 4 Kindergarten</span></a> just did a post on Math Work Stations with a linky party to several more great blogs. I can't wait to dig into this!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 1st step seems to be figuring out which organizational system works best for you and your classroom setup. These ideas were only suggestions. Once you have that figured out, start collecting math games and activities to reinforce the math concepts being taught. There are plenty of great ideas already created for you out there. A lot are free, but there are also great ideas available on TpT. As I mentioned, the ideas I have found will be posted here...soon to come...</div>Allison @ Room Mom 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/07444319140373672896noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2305320463778584314.post-15496157098048452222012-06-05T06:45:00.000-07:002012-06-05T06:45:00.263-07:00Literacy Help for the SummerSome of my first graders are just beginning to grasp reading and they are doing so well! I am so proud and excited for them, but I hate to lose them at this point in the year because I don't want their reading to regress. As a result, I have been trying to come up with a literacy packet or ideas to send home for extra practice over the summer months. I have to say that in order to become a successful reader, the first step is sight word recognition. With my lowest group of readers this year, I have pushed and pushed sight word activities during our guided reading time. After reading a book on their level we usually do some kind of practice or review depending on how much time we have left. Their favorite game is sight word go fish, but we have also played sight word bingo, flash cards, and memory. Here are a few more activities I plan to incorporate next year, but that I also plan to send home with some of my students over the summer. <br />
I recently found this <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Can-Speed-Read" style="color: #cc0000;">I Can Speed Read</a> packet on TpT, which focuses on racing against yourself on reading sight words. It is $2.00, but I figure if I can get a child excited about reading and it helps them to recognize their sight words quicker, it is totally worth it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDb_okva6TrUKYpc2L4Mb40aB7iQSjptxy1rQuPSyY4LF1rL_Mky3nGmr3qtQ2TjNAic-F4nu6dX6X23PdV57S_lxKITyDH2bIshv8Si88XfGatRTmK6BAF1LVJHAXopYmJTK22JixWQ4/s1600/166773992420877774_jjENXLk2_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDb_okva6TrUKYpc2L4Mb40aB7iQSjptxy1rQuPSyY4LF1rL_Mky3nGmr3qtQ2TjNAic-F4nu6dX6X23PdV57S_lxKITyDH2bIshv8Si88XfGatRTmK6BAF1LVJHAXopYmJTK22JixWQ4/s320/166773992420877774_jjENXLk2_c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
If fluency and sight word recognition is your goal, you can try this idea called One breath boxes from <a href="http://www.teachertipster.com/onebreathboxes.pdf" style="color: #cc0000;">Teacher Tipster</a>. Swamp First Graders adapted this idea to create her own one breath boxes based on the Reading Street program. See if your child/student is able to read all the words in a box in one breath in order to build fluency. Did I mention that both are free!?!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These roll and read fluency practice sheets come from <a href="http://www.firstgradebrain.com/2011/06/scott-foresman-reading-street-1st-grade.html" style="color: #cc0000;">First Grade Brain</a>. They were created based on the Scott Foresman Reading Street. My school district does not use this program, but they still look like great practice for fluency. You can find units 2 - 5 on TpT for $2.00 each.<br />

I have also come up with a list of book suggestions for summer, based on guided reading levels. So many times I have parents frustrated after visiting the library because they just aren't sure what their child is capable of reading. Hopefully this list will not only offer a few suggestions, but will also allow the parents to compare the varying levels of difficulties. Please let me know if there are other great books or series I should include or if you disagree with anything you see. Thank you!<br />

Still looking for door decoration ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week? Here are a few more ideas I dug up that were done at my school last year. Honestly, the doors turn out to be masterpieces! It's almost like looking at a large scrapbook page when you see some of the details! I think it's safe to safe the teachers always feel very appreciated during the week!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first picture was my door last year. See what I mean? Tons of work and details! In case you are unable to read the message on the door, it says: "The wind told the grasses, and the grasses told the trees. The trees told the bushes, and the bushes told the bees. The bees told the birds and the birds sang clear, Mrs. _______ is the best teacher of the year!" </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ3wQcGmQzDs-fllK24YG11MecMaKY2TbxVkO5thFaqaXdGFhgU2YNzgPNgN8RvHu5rGxe4yZzQT_PeNm2e1Z-3mim78jQarepRA0Wj6U_H4JtWq36CkPoFdW2AE-3LRCCfYJP1mTJw24/s1600/door3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ3wQcGmQzDs-fllK24YG11MecMaKY2TbxVkO5thFaqaXdGFhgU2YNzgPNgN8RvHu5rGxe4yZzQT_PeNm2e1Z-3mim78jQarepRA0Wj6U_H4JtWq36CkPoFdW2AE-3LRCCfYJP1mTJw24/s400/door3.jpg" width="230" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I don't care what you say; Cricut or no Cricut, cutting out all those letters and gluing them to the door would take FOREVER! All of my students had their picture taken and placed either in a flower (at the bottom) or in an apple on the tree. I must say, I was super impressed!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Mrs. __________ COOKS up great classroom fun!"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the door are attached some small kitchen items with sayings. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Thanks for OPENING our minds and filling them with knowledge." - can opener</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"You have showed us love and SERVED us well." - spatula</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Your RECIPE as a teacher wins the grand prize." - recipe cards</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Here's the SCOOP, you're the best! - ice cream scoop</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"There's not a GRATEr teacher than you!" - small grater</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"There's no way to MEASURE your influence in our lives." - measuring cups/spoons.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you wanted to use this theme, I am sure you could come up more sayings, but those were the ones posted on this door. Oh and yes, that is also a real apron hanging on the teacher on the door. Way cute!</div>

Grab a Drink to Give as a Gift!Since my last post included a pop bottle, I thought I would continue on with the pop theme. Here are some more gift suggestions including pop (or soda, depending on where you live!)<br />
<br />
First of all I have to send a shout out to one of my college friends, Adrianne, who is the author of <a href="http://cogworks.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Cog Works</span></a>. Not only did she provide you with FREE printables for parent volunteer gifts, but some of these could even be adapted to become a teacher thank you gift. Thanks Adrianne for sharing!<br />

Even though this next one isn't pop, it's close enough. I wish I knew where this idea came from, but I found it on Pinterest without a link back to the source. :( Let me know if you know where to find this idea so I can give credit. Anyway, judging from the picture, I would say to fill a cello bag with lemon flavored items such as Minute Maid pink lemonade, Lemon Heads, lemon drops, crystal lite packets, lemonade flavored bubble gum, etc. and attach a tag saying: "When life hands you LEMONS, make lemonade!"<br />

Take an empty, clean pop bottle and cut a slit down one side. Stuff glue sticks and Easter grass (as filler) into the bottle. Cover up the slit by wrapping a label around the pop bottle and you have yourself a simple teacher appreciation gift.</div>

I'm thinking about how much fun my kids would have giving something like this to their friends for their birthday or Christmas gifts! Too cute.</div>

Whew! What a mouth full!! In case you aren't aware, today is secretary appreciation day. Don't worry I am posting this in the morning so you still have time to get something together. This year I decided to make a class book for each of my elementary school's 2 secretaries. The pages in the book say: "I think you're a great secretary because you __________ ." I was a little nervous of the first grader's responses! :) Here are a few samples:<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNXMo8mpnhHqVEqs4arTMd6rBaoBl2kLmpEvmIBZRwNjFr6FoqjTQL5odEwNOaFcAkWqVjRz5ulKMNxqeXthfiu6kem-7O7rcLJSAFi3VSTLlVRedAMB6LBiwlbY4Vaur0yQ8b_wP1hGs/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNXMo8mpnhHqVEqs4arTMd6rBaoBl2kLmpEvmIBZRwNjFr6FoqjTQL5odEwNOaFcAkWqVjRz5ulKMNxqeXthfiu6kem-7O7rcLJSAFi3VSTLlVRedAMB6LBiwlbY4Vaur0yQ8b_wP1hGs/s400/2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...are funny and really nice.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTgx6E-77uIqklw0r1hqNmEB1QZVA8jjBZDrcd24cixINFgbVB0o-VU__bWGjTaoRs7EfxbKONEFxYr5AxAa96t6EKvOxdLbLuF08gVwCZdmv5tMZJ_29N3NbFLZKoj7TDJ9RYh0NE3NU/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTgx6E-77uIqklw0r1hqNmEB1QZVA8jjBZDrcd24cixINFgbVB0o-VU__bWGjTaoRs7EfxbKONEFxYr5AxAa96t6EKvOxdLbLuF08gVwCZdmv5tMZJ_29N3NbFLZKoj7TDJ9RYh0NE3NU/s400/3.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...give us cookies.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also included a little treat (Skor candy bar) with a tag that read: "Our school really <u>SKOR</u>ed when we got you for a secretary!" My daughter who is in middle school wanted to take some to her school's secretaries too. Nothing like showin' a little love!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgxpjERyC9gb7X5fzGfFMDEjeDJyGCReqAD28AZcuA9alzpvI6WzqqMSWU6v_B0kNAI4dWk1xrpSPIbihKLm4SP5a3VieA3_5bV655X-l0zWvDmSiiLjUh3k_-E30ZpKU_tLMKcYPFsI/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgxpjERyC9gb7X5fzGfFMDEjeDJyGCReqAD28AZcuA9alzpvI6WzqqMSWU6v_B0kNAI4dWk1xrpSPIbihKLm4SP5a3VieA3_5bV655X-l0zWvDmSiiLjUh3k_-E30ZpKU_tLMKcYPFsI/s400/4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
My same daughter recently completed her basketball season. The season lasted forever and her coaches were both super cute. Both coaches are young moms and with the hours of time they spent coaching games, driving to games and attending practices, we wanted to do something to show how much we appreciated their willingness to help out. I came across this teacher gift idea thru <a href="http://jenni-simplysavvy.blogspot.com/2010/05/candy-gram-pail.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Simply Savvy</span></a>, and decided to change it up a bit to make it more coach friendly. A few changes in the words, and wa-la:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGJKWETfpNKWGPbqKBlmUHE7jUUbv4fP2msMqzqRCVAhyphenhyphengwuvqGJHeUWZ2pT3T3tc6EsBbGCuefuSI5BPSw7oYd9cl3JIUmoP5Bg0D5A891qPisrSnMAXP7xQj-UfG5Z8BPwZc6Y-Fbvc/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGJKWETfpNKWGPbqKBlmUHE7jUUbv4fP2msMqzqRCVAhyphenhyphengwuvqGJHeUWZ2pT3T3tc6EsBbGCuefuSI5BPSw7oYd9cl3JIUmoP5Bg0D5A891qPisrSnMAXP7xQj-UfG5Z8BPwZc6Y-Fbvc/s400/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I grabbed two clear plastic paint cans from Michael's craft store for $2.00 each and filled them with candy (as labeled on the tag). <br />
Last, but definitely not least, I made my parent volunteer some thank you gifts. This idea comes from <a href="http://www.eventtrender.com/blog/2011/11/a-is-for-apple.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Event Trender</span></a>. Put a green apple and jar of homemade dip in a clear cello bag, add a tag and hopefully it gets the message across of just how much I have loved and appreciated my parent volunteers this year!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Recently my grade covered the OU/OW words. I grabbed this activity from Babbling Abby at <a href="http://theinspiredapple.blogspot.com/2011/04/ouow-activities-continued-first-grade.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">The Inspired Apple</span></a>. Where do I start with her? Her talents totally inspire me to become a better teacher!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My kids wrote an OU and an OW sentence and illustrated each (as seen above). I made a cow and mouse poster, which are now displayed in my room for the students to refer to. Later in the week, I had my kids write about a time they got an OWie. Trust me when I say that EVERY child has a story about that!! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids enjoyed writing their stories, but even more so, they loved illustrating their hurt bodies and putting a band-aid on their owies. I am going to have to stock up on cute band-aids just for this writing activity!</div>

I didn't use this "My ouch story" paper, but it definitely a cute one to use! </div>

I came across these perfect little posters (via <a href="http://differentiationstation.blogspot.com/2012/02/r-controlled-freebie.html"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Differentiation Station</span></a>) to reinforce R-controlled words (OR, AR and IR/ER/UR). This is just one of the 3 posters, so head on over to grab all 3 for your classroom.</div>

I printed them out, backed them with construction paper (to add more color), laminated and have all 3 currently hanging in my classroom. I can't tell you how often I see my students looking at these as a reminder of how to spell a word.<br />
Last week our words were "double o" words. As spelling practice one day, we used Froot Loops for the OO's. <br />

I told the kids if they were able to all get 100% on our spelling test, we would celebrate by having a cOOkie & bOOk party! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Put the word party with anything, and the kids get excited. Apparently this trick worked, because EVERY SINGLE STUDENT got 100%!! I was so proud of them!<br />
I found these "You are one SMART cookie on <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/One-Smart-Cookie-Motivational-Printable" style="color: #cc0000;">TpT</a> for $1.00 if you are interested, otherwise I am sure you could create your own little sign.<br />

This time of year I find to be the hardest because the kids are all so ready for summer and things get a little crazy! With that being said, this time of the year is also my FAVORITE as far as what my kids are capable of doing and what we teach. I will be sad to let these cute kids go in a month, but for now we are still learning while squeezing a little fun in too!</div>Allison @ Room Mom 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/07444319140373672896noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2305320463778584314.post-90928636980741675662012-04-23T05:27:00.001-07:002012-04-23T05:27:30.499-07:00To the BEARY best teacher!<div style="text-align: center;">

You could add the students' names to die cut bears or even a head shot of each student. If you wanted to add a treat, you could glue on some cinnamon bears, gummy bears or even Teddy Grahams.</div>Allison @ Room Mom 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/07444319140373672896noreply@blogger.com1
